![]() ![]() ![]() That game fit me like a well-worn glove, I slipped into it almost perfectly and couldn't get enough of it and I was shocked to see the number of people who really didn't like it. Doom Eternal is also a very divisive game, for a number of reasons. It holds your hand in that its tutorial messages tell you how to do everything, but understanding how to pull it off and actually pulling it off are two very different things. It is a game that prides itself on its difficulty. Worth noting, Doom Eternal is fucking hard. I also grew up on a steady diet of platformers and Metroid Prime, so I didn't find the transition too hard, plus spinning around in mid-air is a lot easier with a mouse than with a controller, so that could have something to do with it. It's easily my favorite game of 2020 and probably one of my favorite FPS games of all time. Ledge grabs and air dashes and double jumps make it so much easier to figure out what to do and execute than "here are some clunky controls that barely work to begin with, have fun on this platforming sequence and you can't save and the checkpoint is 15 minutes back."Īgain, no shade for not liking the platforming in Doom Eternal, but having played games in the era of Rise of the Triad I find modern FPS platforming to be a delight in comparison.Įxcept for the story (which is cheesy and sometimes cringe-y but I don't have a problem with it) and the Marauders (which are counter to everything else about Doom's combat design in the worst way), I loved everything about Doom Eternal, platforming included. I don't mind it in Doom 2016 or even Doom Eternal. I actually think first person platforming has gotten much better. The original Turok is the one that jumps to mind, but there were innumerable games where you would find yourself trying to master slippery controls and bad geometry to complete horrible platforming sequences. Without shading OP at all, because it totally makes sense to abandon a game that you're not enjoying for any reason, especially when you didn't pay money for it and have other stuff that you might enjoy to play, I really feel like Doom Eternal gets a bad rap for its platforming when A) Doom 2016 had a lot of platforming, even if it was simpler and easier, and B) At least Doom Eternal gives you the tools necessary for the platforming.īecause to answer OP's question I can think of a lot of games that had first person platforming, especially back in the day, that was so much worse. ![]()
